Dr William O’Brien

Dr O’Brien is the director of stroke services on the Central Coast Local Health District, NSW covering both Wyong and Gosford hospitals.

Dr O’Brien is available at Tumbi Umbi.

He did undergraduate and some of his postgraduate training in Ireland before moving to Australia where he completed neurology training. He then spent a fellowship year in Newcastle focusing on acute stroke with a particular interest in hyperacute imaging and management of acute stroke.

He has been a staff specialist on the Central Coast since 2012. Since then he has focused on restructuring the acute service to allow for a sustainable model of care as well as introducing advanced imaging to the routine assessment of stroke patients.

Dr O’Brien has a keen interest in research, in particular, advancing acute treatments for stroke as well as developing systems that translate best practice to routine care in different settings. He is currently involved in the setting up of a telestroke project in NSW.

Dr O’Brien runs a clinic at Central Coast Neurosciences, Tumbi Umbi,  seeing patients with stroke and transient ischaemic attack (TIA) who have been admitted and discharged from Gosford and Wyong Hospitals.
