[TIA, or transient ischemic attack, occurs when blood flow to part of the brain is interrupted for a short period of time, mimicking stroke-like symptoms (usually for less than 24 hours). TIAs generally do not cause permanent brain damage but should be regarded as a serious warning sign that a stroke may happen in the future.
